Pumpkin projects!

The students did a wonderful job with their pumpkin projects! I loved the paragraphs they wrote to describe a character and the plot in the book they chose. While presenting the paragraphs, the students made a discovery...they realized that they wrote a persuasive text. This connected them to what we are learning in our reading. We've discussed why authors write what they do. Do the authors persuade, inform, or entertain?  I love it when the "light bulbs" come on, and my students take ownership of their learning.

I hope you enjoy these pumpkins as much as I did...

Social Studies Project

The students did a great job with their projects last week! They were all so excited to share. Once they were finished they said, "that wasn't so bad after all!" I hope to do more projects! I had a blast seeing everyone's hard work.

Going home...

A little snap shot of what we do when we wait for the bell to ring...

Did you know your child took a trip to New York?

During social studies today, we took a tour of New York, Connecticut, Philadelphia and Apex, NC! You just thought they were at school today...ha!

Google Maps was able to show us a virtual tour of all these wonderful places. We went street-side and "walked" with the people downtown. We saw in New York and Philadelphia that the McDonald's is on the bottom floor of a tall building. In Connecticut we saw that the homes are spread apart and they have larger yards. Here in Apex, we went to the suburb neighborhood of Scottsmill. They were really able to see how Scottsmill differed from the row houses that they saw in NY.

If you get a chance, explore a little more with your child. This really helped them see the differences between the three!

Welcome to Our Classroom Blog: Mrs. D's Sweet Peas

Well, we are nearing the end of the first quarter and I can finally say that my blog is up and running.  My hope is to post pictures of our "daily happenings" in the classroom.  If you signed the form at the beginning of the year giving me permission to post your child's face on the Internet, then you will definitely be seeing them in the classroom pictures I post.  If you did not give permission for your child's face to appear on the Internet, then you will not see your child in any of the classroom pictures I post on this blog.  If you change your mind and decide that you would like to see them here to forward our blog onto out-of-town grandmas and grandpas, just let me know and I'll get you a new form.  AND just to reiterate to everyone, we will never post a child's real name with their face.  So, become a follower to the right and stay in the loop of all our classroom happenings.  In the coming days I hope to post links to online websites appropriate for your child to visit at home.

Happy Blogging!
